Although originally approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of eye and muscle spasms, BOTOX Cosmetic was quickly recognized for its cosmetic value. Properly placed injections of BOTOX Cosmetic block nerve impulses sent to muscles, weakening them to the point where they cannot contract, and temporarily eliminating moderately severe furrows and lines. BOTOX Cosmetic is used to treat the following:
According to Allergan, BOTOX Cosmetic has been “extensively researched, with approximately 2500 studies.”
BOTOX® is an injectable prescription drug that is FDA approved for temporary treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. Derived from a purified biological protein produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum, BOTOX® is a nerve impulse “blocker” that binds to the nerve endings and prevents the release of chemical transmitters that activate muscle activity and movement.
BOTOX® effectively blocks impulses from the nerves to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines, preventing them from contracting. After treatment, the injected areas remain smooth and unwrinkled to provide a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance while the untreated areas are still able to contract, allowing for normal facial expressions to be unaffected. BOTOX® treatment takes no more than 10 minutes to administer and requires no anesthetic. With just a few tiny injections, its results can last up to four months.
Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) is a medical condition that can be successfully treated with BOTOX®. BOTOX® is an FDA-approved treatment for excessive underarm sweating when topical agents do not work. BOTOX® blocks the chemical transmitter that causes sweating and is used mainly on isolated cases of armpit sweating. Injection of BOTOX® into the armpit areas can effectively treat excessive sweating for about three to six months at a time.
Migraine headaches are painful and debilitating, and millions of people suffer from them. BOTOX® is an effective treatment for adults who suffer from chronic migraine headaches (15 or more migraine headaches per month lasting four or more hours each day). For adults who suffer from chronic migraine headaches, BOTOX® Cosmetic is the first and only FDA-approved preventative treatment proven to reduce the number of headache days every month.
Results from BOTOX injections are apparent within 24 to 48 hours, and are maximized by 30 days. Results often last between 3 and 4 months.
Injection-site side effects of BOTOX Cosmetic are usually mild and temporary, and include the following:
Normal activities may be resumed immediately after receiving injections.
Like BOTOX®, Dysport® is derived from clostridium botulinum and works to relax the muscles of the face. However, the protein synthesis that it contains is slightly smaller than it is in BOTOX®, which allows Dysport® to have a noticeably quicker effect. In most instances, Dysport® is also more cost-effective, which is why some patients prefer it over BOTOX®. Like BOTOX®, this injectable can also be completed in fewer than 10 minutes.
XEOMIN® is also derived from clostridium botulinum and is an FDA-approved treatment that has the same effects on the facial muscles as BOTOX® and Dysport®. Unlike BOTOX®, XEOMIN® does not contain any additives, which lowers the possibility of the body forming antibodies.
