Breast Augmentation

WHAT IS BREAST AUGMENTATION?

Breast Augmentation is a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure that increases the size and improves the shape of women’s breasts. Some women lack confidence in their body due to small and underdeveloped breast, sagging breasts due to pregnancy or major weight loss.

If you want larger and fuller breasts double-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Armen Serebrakian can help you achieve your desired goal and boost your confidence with natural-looking results.

CANDIDATES FOR BREAST ENHANCEMENT SURGERY

Candidates for breast augmentation are often women who are dissatisfied with their breast appearance looking to achieve one of the following goals:

  • Increase fullness and projection of your breasts
  • Improve the balance of your figure
  • Enhance your self-image and self-confidence

Increasingly, men are also seeking breast augmentation for cosmetic as well as for reconstructive treatments of the chest (pectoral implants). The same treatment options are available to men as to women.

TYPES OF BREAST IMPLANTS

At the Bay Area Laser Cosmetic Surgery Center, we offer two breast implant options for breast augmentation:

  • Saline implants: are made of a silicone elastomer shell filled with sterile saline liquid
  • Silicone gel implants: made of a silicone shell filled with a viscous silicone gel.

SILICONE GEL IMPLANTS

In comparison to saline, these implants are often said to fee more natural. The silicone gel flows differently within its shell, resembling breast tissue to the touch. If the implant ruptures, the gel could leak into the breast pocket or remain within the shell. This implant will not collapse if ruptured.
We offer silicone breast implants to women 22 years of age and older. There are a variety of silicone implants to match different body shapes, sizes and types.

SALINE IMPLANTS

Saline breast implants have the consistent of water. They are inserted into the breast implant pocket before they are filled with sterile salt water. This allows Dr. Serebrakian to to fill the shell to the desired volume. In case the implant ruptures, the implant will collapse and sterile salt water will reabsorb into the body. Saline implants are available to women 18 years of age and older.

THE BREAST AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE

Dr. Serebrakian makes an incision to create a pocket for the implant. Once the pocket is created he will position the implant and then closes the skin where the incision was made. The breast augmentation patient goes home in a special compression bra. This bra helps to reduce swelling and hold the breasts in the correct position.

Incisions vary based on the type of breast implant, the degree of enlargement desired, your particular anatomy and patient-surgeon preference.

  • Periareolar Incision: is made around the outline of the areola
  • Inframammary Incision: is placed along the crease or fold of the breast where the breast and skin come together
  • Transaxillary Incision: is made in the natural fold of the armpit tissue
  • TUBA Incision: the cut is made on the rim of the navel, and underneath the skin through a tunnel of fatty tissue

BREAST AUGMENTATION RECOVERY TIME

Recovery time for breast augmentation patients is usually between five to seven days, during which time we advise patients to rest and keep activity to a very minimal level. Initially, there may be slight bleeding around the incision.

BREAST AUGMENTATION WITH FAT TRANSFER

Breast enlargement with body fat transfer essentially uses liposuction to take fat from other parts of your body and inject it into your breasts. This is an option for women who are looking for a small increase in breast size and would prefer natural results.

HOW LONG AFTER BREASTFEEDING CAN I HAVE BREAST IMPLANT SURGERY?

Dr. Armen Serebrakian recommends that a patient waits at least 6 months from the time that they last breastfed undergoing a breast augmentation procedure. The reason for this because we want to give the breast enough time to reach the final postpartum size and allow us to choose the best implant size for your frame. In addition, this helps ensure that there is no more milk in the breast as this could increase the risk for an infection around the implant.

RISKS OF BREAST AUGMENTATION

  • Infection
  • Changes in nipple or breast sensation
  • Implant leakage or rupture
  • The formation of tight scar tissue around the implant (capsular contracture)
  • Fluid accumulation (seroma)
  • Wrinkling of the skin over the implant
