Am I a Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck may be right for you if you have:
- Loose or weak stomach muscles due to aging or pregnancy
- Sagging or excess skin in the abdominal area
- Fat in the lower abdomen that is unresponsive to exercise
Who is Not a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?
Although tummy tuck surgery has gain popularity in the removal of excess fat in the abdominal area, this procedure is not recommended for everyone. This does not target the correction of stretch marks, these may be removed or somewhat improved if they are located on the areas of excess skin that will be excised. We do not suggest the following to receive a tummy tuck:
- Those looking for a substitute for weight loss or an appropriate exercise program
- Individuals that are effectively dieting and planning to have substantial weight loss
- Women considering future pregnancies
- Those seeking to correct stretch marks
How is an Abdominoplasty Performed?
The tummy tuck procedure consists of a horizontal incision that is made just above the pubic area, which is designed to be hidden within the area normally covered by underwear and swimsuits. The length of the incision will depend on the amount of excess skin to be removed. The loose muscles and connective tissue are then brought together and secured in their new position with stitches. Once the muscles are taut, the excess skin can be removed. The results are a firmer, more toned abdomen and a trim waistline.
What Are the Different Types of Tummy Tucks?
Mini Tummy Tuck
A mini tummy tuck improves the lower belly with less extensive surgery for the patient. The incision is shorter than a traditional tummy tuck and has a shorter recovery.
Classic or Full Tummy Tuck
A classic or full tummy tuck improves the upper and lower abdomen of the patient. This procedure rejuvenates the entire abdominal area instead of a small lift.
Extended Tummy Tuck
An extended tummy tuck improves the upper and lower abdomen in addition to the flanks. This is for patients who want improvements to their stomach and nearby areas.
What is the Recovery From a Tummy Tuck?
Initially, your abdomen will probably be swollen and feel sore. During your recovery, dressings or bandages may be applied to your incisions. You may also be wrapped in an elastic bandage or a compression garment to minimize swelling and support your abdomen as it heals. In spite of your discomfort, your surgeon will instruct you to walk around within the first few days to encourage blood flow and healing.
Your recovery time will depend on the extent of your surgery and the condition you were in before the surgery. Dr. Serebrakian will give you post-op instructions and follow-up steps for a fast and easy recovery.
Are Tummy Tuck Scars Permanent?
The tummy tuck scar may take several months to a year to fade as much as it will.

Tummy Tuck FAQs
How does a tummy tuck differ from liposuction?

Although both procedures improve the appearance of your midsection, they address different concerns. Liposuction removes localized pockets of stubborn fat but does not tighten loose skin or repair separated abdominal muscles. A tummy tuck removes excess skin, tightens weakened abdominal muscles, and reshapes the abdomen for a flatter, firmer appearance. If you've experienced pregnancy, significant weight loss, or age-related skin laxity, a tummy tuck may provide more comprehensive improvement.
Can a tummy tuck repair separated abdominal muscles after pregnancy?
Yes. One of the major benefits of a tummy tuck is the ability to repair diastasis recti, a condition in which the abdominal muscles separate during pregnancy or significant weight gain. Exercise can strengthen the muscles but often cannot bring them back together once they have separated. During a tummy tuck, the muscles are carefully sutured back into a more natural position, restoring core support while creating a flatter abdominal profile. Many patients also notice improved posture and greater core stability after muscle repair.
How should I prepare for tummy tuck surgery?
Preparing for surgery can help support a smoother recovery and optimal results. Before your procedure, your surgeons will review your medical history, medications, and lifestyle habits. You may be asked to stop smoking, avoid certain medications or supplements that increase bleeding, and arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery. It's also helpful to prepare a comfortable recovery area with pillows, loose clothing, healthy meals, and frequently used items within easy reach. Following your pre-operative instructions carefully helps minimize risks and promotes proper healing.
How long should I wait after pregnancy before having a tummy tuck?
Most surgeons recommend waiting until you have fully recovered from childbirth and have maintained a stable weight for several months before undergoing tummy tuck surgery. This allows your body time to heal naturally and ensures the most predictable surgical outcome. If you plan to have additional children, it is generally recommended to postpone a tummy tuck until your family is complete, as a future pregnancy can stretch the repaired muscles and skin, affecting your long-term results.
Can liposuction be performed with a tummy tuck?
Yes. In fact, combining liposuction with a tummy tuck is one of the most common ways to achieve more comprehensive body contouring. While a tummy tuck focuses on tightening the abdominal wall and removing excess skin, liposuction can sculpt surrounding areas, such as the waist, flanks, or upper abdomen, to create smoother, more balanced body proportions. Because every patient has different goals and anatomy, our plastic surgeons develop a customized surgical plan that, when appropriate, safely combines procedures to maximize your overall results.
Will a tummy tuck help me maintain my results after weight loss?
A tummy tuck can help you enjoy the results of your weight loss by removing excess skin and creating a smoother, firmer abdominal contour. However, it is not a substitute for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The best long-term results are typically achieved when you reach a stable weight before surgery and continue to follow a balanced diet and a regular exercise routine afterward. Significant weight fluctuations can affect your surgical results, so maintaining a consistent weight helps preserve your new abdominal contours for years to come.
Can an Abdominoplasty Be Combined With Other Procedures?
Yes, a tummy tuck can be combined with other procedures. This is often seen with a mommy makeover procedure which combines a tummy tuck with a breast lift, breast augmentation, and liposuction.
