I want to get liposuction, but am I a good candidate for the procedure?
As with any surgical procedure, liposuction comes with risks. The help mitigates those risks it is best that you are in general good health. To be a good candidate for liposuction you must:
Not smoke
Have elastic and firm skin
Be within 30% of your ideal weight
I’m nervous about getting liposuction, what can I expect?
It is normal to feel some apprehension about any surgical procedure. A liposuction surgery will take place at a surgical center or your doctor’s office. You will go home the day of but will need someone to drive you. If you are getting a particularly large amount of fat removed, you may need to stay overnight. Before the beginning of your surgery, your doctor may mark the parts of your body that are specifically being treated. Next, you will either be given general anesthesia or a “local”—meaning you will be awake but will not feel pain. As with any surgery, there are always risks involved including bleeding, uneven fat removal, nerve damage, and infection.
Do I need to take time off work to recover?
Yes. Some people return to work within a few days while others need a few weeks before doing so. The difficulty you experience during recovery depends on many factors including the type of liposuction you get. Bruising, swelling, and soreness are normal during the first few weeks after your surgery. During the first 1 to 2 months you will wear a compression garment to control the amount of swelling. The doctor will prescribe an antibiotic to stop infection.
