What you need to know about liposuction
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that removes fat from the body. It is an option used after diet and exercise have failed to remove stubborn fat. Common areas for the procedure are the face, buttocks, thighs, belly, and hips. As you consider whether or not to get a liposuction procedure, consider the following:
Am I a good candidate for liposuction?
As with any surgical procedure, liposuction has risks, so it is important to be in general good health. The ideal candidate will be within 30% of their perfect weight, have firm skin, and is a non-smoker. If you have heart disease, a low immune system, diabetes, or issues with blood flow, it is not recommended that you pursue this surgery.
How do I get ready for liposuction surgery?
If you choose to pursue liposuction, you will have a consultation with your surgeon to determine your goals and talk about the benefits and risks. This is your time to discuss any concerns or questions you may have. You will then be provided with instructions on how to get ready for the surgery, which may include alcohol and diet constraints. Be sure to tell your surgeon of medications (both over the counter and prescription) you are on and allergies you have.
What should I expect from liposuction surgery?
Prior to the start of the surgery, the doctor might make markings on the areas of your body that are the focus of the procedure. Photos will be taken for a before and after comparison. Next, you’ll be put on general anesthesia, which allows you to be asleep during the surgery. In some cases, you may only need a “local” anesthetic, which will not put you to sleep but will make it so you can’t feel anything. Typically, liposuction is an out-patient procedure in which you’ll go home the same day. Be sure you have arranged for someone to drive you home.
How long does it take to recover from liposuction?
You will have swelling, bruising, and tenderness for a few weeks after the surgery. This is normal and part of the healing process. In some cases, your surgeon might have you wear a compression garment for a couple of months post surgery. Some people can get back to their normal schedules and activities after only two weeks.
