Deciding to get a liposuction procedure can be an exciting but overwhelming decision. To help you determine if liposuction is right for you, here are common questions that patients ask about this fat removing procedure.
What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that eliminates fat in specified areas of the body. It is an excellent option when efforts in dieting and exercise have failed to deliver the results you want. A dermatologic or plastic surgeon usually performs the procedure on the face, buttocks, thighs, hips, or belly to improve one’s appearance.
Am I a Good Candidate For Liposuction?
The top qualification for getting a liposuction procedure is to have realistic expectations. Liposuction cannot rid your body of cellulite, but it can remove unwanted fat in areas such as the hips, face, or belly. You also need to be in good health prior to your procedure to help reduce the possibility of complications. Specifically, you need to be a non smoker and within 30% of your ideal weight. If you suffer from diabetes, heart problems, or a weak immune system liposuction may not be the right procedure for you.
What Can I Expect During My Liposuction Procedure?
Your procedure will probably take place at your doctor’s office or a surgical center. Liposuction is typically an outpatient procedure, meaning you’ll go home the day of. Be certain you have someone to drive you home. Prior to your procedure, the doctor may mark specific areas of your body where the fat removal will take place. After that, general anesthesia will be given or a “local”, which allows you to feel no pain.
What is the Liposuction Recovery Time?
Bruising, soreness, and swelling are all common parts of the recovery process. You may need to wear a compression garment for 4-8 weeks to help stabilize the swelling. Antibiotics may also be necessary to help stave off infection.
