What is the rhinoplasty procedure?
Rhinoplasty, also referred to by most as a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose. This can include altering the size, changing the shape of the tip or bridge, narrowing the span of the nostrils, or altering or recontouring the angle between the nose and upper lip.
Why might I consider rhinoplasty surgery?
There are a variety of reasons that someone may choose to undergo the rhinoplasty procedure. Some individuals may want to improve the appearance of their noses, either for aesthetic reasons or to correct any birth defects or injuries. Others may want to improve breathing problems, such as a deviated septum.
How is the surgery performed?
During the surgery, an incision is made either inside the nostrils or across the columella (the strip of tissue separating the nostrils). The bone and cartilage beneath the skin are then sculpted to achieve the desired shape and size. In some cases, cartilage might be harvested from another part of the body, such as the ear, to construct and support certain areas of the nose. The incisions are closed with stitches or surgical tape.
What can I expect during recovery?
After surgery, a splint will be placed on the nose to support and protect it during the healing process. Swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose is common, and pain medication will likely be prescribed by your surgeon to manage any discomfort. It’s important to avoid strenuous activity or exposure to pollutants for several weeks following the procedure, as this can affect healing. Full results may not be apparent until after all swelling has subsided, which could take up to a year.
What are the risks of rhinoplasty?
You will need to discuss potential risks and complications with your surgeon before undergoing any cosmetic procedure. As with any surgery, issues such as infection and scarring may be impacted by how closely a patient follows the post-operative instructions given by their doctor.
