They say that we may accumulate a few enemies as we age. Age itself can feel like an enemy. Gravity is another example. As we look at the dewy faces of teens and twenty-somethings, we may consider adding them to the list, as well. Instead of developing a long list of foes, we say look forward! There are numerous ways in which facial aging can be addressed today, and we are happy to have the power of information on our side.
One of the most significant advances in aesthetic medicine has been the development of treatments to restore volume to various parts of the body. For facial rejuvenation, we have largely taken to the use of soft tissue fillers. The most popular of these products are in the Juvéderm family which contain hyaluronic acid. Other fillers smooth the skin with synthetic particulates of calcium hydroxyapatite or other ingredients. The correct use of any filler can beautifully restore youthfulness to the face. However, there is another option available in our cosmetic surgery office: fat transfer.
When Life Gives You Lemons
The appearance of unwanted fat on any part of the body can feel like a prime example of life giving you lemons or something that isn’t very appealing, at least at first sight. Long ago, physicians learned that they could make lemonade out of the lemons of unwanted fat. The fat transfer was first seen more than a century ago and has recently hit a strong stride in aesthetic medicine. Today, approximately 50,000 procedures each year involve a fat transfer.
Perhaps there is no better way to use unwanted fat than to enhance another area of the body. Common uses of autologous fat include cheek and chin augmentation, eyelid rejuvenation, and filling hollow temples.
Fillers and Fat: The Comparison
There are advantages to dermal filler treatment, and advantages to fat injections. Aspects of fat transfer that are important to know include:
The fat that is introduced to an area, such as the cheeks, will stay there forever. You must be ready for permanent results.
Fat cells are extracted from your own body, so there is no worry about the adverse reaction.
A small percentage of the cells that are injected are absorbed. Final results may not be noticed for a few months.
