The recovery time for facelift surgery varies greatly among individuals, but most patients experience similar recovery stages and have similar restrictions. In general, the more extensive your facelift procedure, the longer the recovery period will likely be. Here’s what you can expect from your facelift recovery.
Coming Home from Surgery
Immediately after the procedure, your face and head will likely be bandaged. There may also be tubes to drain any excess blood and fluid. You should be able to remove your bandages at your first post-op visit.
In the first day or two following your procedure, you may experience mild to moderate pain for a day or two. Over-the-counter pain medications or a doctor’s prescription can help relieve some of this discomfort. While severe pain is rare, you should contact your doctor immediately if you experience any.
In addition, your neck may be tight, and you may see some bruising or swelling. Whether resting or sleeping, be sure to keep your head elevated to relieve some of the inflammation and improve comfort levels. You should also avoid bending over.
Restrictions, Dos, and Don’ts
Your surgeon will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions as well as some dos and don’ts, such as:
- Sleep with your head elevated.
- Stand, sit, or walk for optimum head position.
- Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs.
- Wait to drive until your doctor gives you the okay.
- Avoid bending, lifting, and vigorous exercise.
- Avoid sun exposure. Use a hat, sunglasses, and sunblock when you must be outside.
On the Road to Recovery
Around two to three weeks following your procedure, you’ll notice your swelling and inflammation subsiding, giving way to your beautiful results. Any scars will continue to lighten and fade with time and healing.
Be sure to continue to update your doctor on your recovery and get their approval before returning to your normal routine.
